How to motivate music students

Rewards for the 40 Piece Challenge

I would like to share with you another motivational strategy that I have implemented with great success in my studio for many years ---- the 40 Piece Challenge!

I am sure many of you are aware of the 40 Piece Challenge that has been widely blogged by leading piano pedagogues such as Samantha Coates, Elissa Milne and Tim Topham.

If you haven't, here are some links that may inspire you to start this challenge in your own studio or school.

How to do the 40 Piece Challenge

Wendy Stevens from ComposeCreate.com has create wall charts and certificate templates specifically for this challenge and has kindly shared them with us.

For me, I use the rails on my staircase and created name tags for my students. For every 10 pieces they master, they progress up the staircase and they receive a little reward for every milestone they achieve.

The pieces they have mastered are recorded in My Music Diary, and this list becomes their concert repertoire which family members and guests can request performances from.

The students love this challenge and of course the little gifts too.

We have designed gift packs that come in packs of 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 rewards, comprising of rubbers, rulers, pencils, clips and keyrings. I'm sure you and your students will love the variety and the quality of these little rewards.

Yours musically,
Anna
